Preparing sheep for a show or the breed sale is back damaging work, so we wanted to find a more comfortable way, hence the "Sheep Table". There are ones for sale from various manufacturers but they come at a price around £400 to £600 which we can not afford. So below is our design.
The steel came from South West Steel Construction the winch came from Winches UK we bought a ready made Ritchie headstock from Mole Avon

This is the ready made headstock from Ritchie part number 76001 - Headstock complete with securing rope!. We ordered just the headstock P/n 76002 because we thought that the headstock complete included the gate attachment ( part 76003) . So ours arrived without the rope to secure the sheep! Thank you to Mole Avon for getting the rope very quickly On our design the headstock will fit into a rectangular 50x50mm post. |

A Ram lamb being groomed, notice the height of the table no bending down saves the back when you have a number of sheep to get ready. Most sheep will stand perfectly still when their head is held firmly (but gently) which is what the Ritchie headstock does. |
Having used the table a number of times, we noticed that the raising of the table was difficult when a large sheep was on the table (above 70kg.) As the winch is capable of moving 750Kg I thought it was more to do with friction between the bolts and arms. So small steel bushes had to be made - a small metal lathe was needed - our wood lathe just would not work! I looked around for several months before finding a reasonable specification/price. Warco sell a good small lathe it is shipped on a small pallet! |
