Hay Making 2012

We will remember 2012 for its awful weather,  and the Olympics. We had a drought to start with and them the wettest April on record, in addition, the temperatures stayed very low which meant the grass did not grow, the grass that did has very little goodness in it. We were having to feed the lambs with hard feed for longer than usual.

Home Paddock was baled as small Bale hay.

The start of mowing Lower New Barn field Months of rain left the ground very soft

Because the ground was muddy and rutted, we could not use the bale sledge so the bales had to be picked up by hand. The small bale Hay in the new barn, the gaps between the bales are so they can "breath" because they got damp overnight from the dew. We will restack them later. 192 small bales of Hay

This year we were recommended to get big square haylage bales made.

They are easier for us to use then the big round bales which harder to open and feed, without special equipment which can't justify or afford. To feed the big square bales you still need a bale handler, but then you just cut the plastic open at one end, cut the 4 strings holding it together and then you use it a slice at a time and the rest of the bale should stay fresh for up to a week. From the 2 fields that we baled as big squares we made 84 bales.
